How to Get the Dog Smell out of Your Home

Many dog owners know the struggle of lingering pet odor in their homes. Whether it’s wet dog smell, or if you have a puppy who’s learning to be house-trained, your home is sure to have the mark of a dog somewhere. Here are some tips for keeping your house fresh and clean.

How to Keep Your House from Smelling Like a Dog

Bath Time is Crucial

The best thing you can do to help your house smell better is to regularly bathe and groom your dog. Many people complain their dog smells bad even after a bath. If your house smells like wet dog, you may want to re-evaluate the way you bathe your doggie friend. Talk to your vet about finding the best dog shampoo. It should be mild enough, so it doesn’t dry out the skin or cause itchy irritation. You also want one that is good at removing odors.

Once you find the best shampoo, work from neck down, massaging the soap into your dog’s fur. Then, use a sprayer to make sure you rinse them well, leaving no soap behind. Dry your dog completely with a thick towel before letting them play.

How to Get Rid of Pet Odor in Carpet and Furniture

Simply sprinkle the baking soda on your furniture or carpet and let it sit for a few minutes to soak up the odor. Then, wipe it away with a clean rag or vacuum it up.

You can also make an odor neutralizing spray. In a spray bottle, pour in a teaspoon of baking soda and one tablespoon of vinegar. After the fizzing stops, add two cups of water and shake the bottle. You can spray this mixture in the air or on any water-safe fabrics to get the smell out.

While you work on the furniture and carpet, don’t forget your dog’s dishes, toys and bed. Sanitize your pet’s dishes like you do your own dishes; put them in the dishwasher to clean any leftover smells. If their toys are washing machine-safe, launder them with their bedding often.
